I got to test Timbre ahead of release, and I’m absolutely impressed with what’s possible here for sound design. All delivered with the same consistently high quality I’ve come to expect from zplane. Timbre slots right into the company’s existing lineup, which already earned a reputation for technical precision with plugins like Élastique Pitch or Peel Stems. Enough, let’s get into it.
Formant Shifting With Two Independent Bands
At the core of the plugin is a two-band system with a huge timbre-shift range of ±36 semitones, covering everything from subtle tweaks to full-blown sonic transformations. In Linked mode, the High and Low bands move together through a single control, great for quick, straightforward shaping across the entire frequency spectrum.
Things get very interesting in Unlinked Mode though, honestly my favorite part of the whole plugin. Here you can dial in completely different settings for the low band versus the high band. On a beat, for instance, you could reshape the hi-hats and percussion while leaving the kick completely untouched. Or push vocals into such extreme territory that entirely new, strange sounds come out the other end. Each band can also be bypassed or soloed independently.
Vocoder Functionality and the Carrier Section
Also very interesting is the built-in carrier section, which lets you create proper vocoder effects, and not just on vocal tracks either. The plugin includes an internal noise generator for whisper-like textures, or you can feed in an external sidechain signal to transfer complex envelopes from one sound onto another, all with remarkable intelligibility, classic zplane precision at work.
Subtle Use: Adding Air With Zero Artifacts
Timbre works just as well on the subtle end of things too. I genuinely enjoy using it to add a bit of that elusive “air” to a track, with zero audible artifacts. That range, from extreme sound design to invisible sonic polish, is exactly what makes Timbre so versatile in my book. A resolution knob adjusts the processing detail, while Dry/Wet blends in the untouched signal.
Latency sits at a low 23 milliseconds at 44.1kHz, a usable number for real-time work in the studio.
