I really love Yamaha guitars for their quality, and this new signature model looks impressive. The Yamaha RS20MM isn’t just a Revstar with a fancy paint job. The real innovation lies in the circuitry: two DiMarzio humbuckers, a five-way switch, and a passive push/pull boost – offering more tonal options than you’d expect from a dual-humbucker guitar with only two controls.
Visually, Yamaha sticks to the classic aesthetics with a vintage sunburst finish and gold hardware. This is a lot of high-quality guitar for the money. Yamaha puts players first with this design, so it could be a great collaboration with its signature Mancuso flourishes.
Who is Matteo Mancuso?
Matteo Mancuso comes from Palermo and plays electric guitar without a pick. His playing style is reminiscent of fingerpicking, similar to that used on a classical guitar. He rose to prominence in 2017 with his trio SNIPS and a version of “The Chicken” that drew millions of YouTube views.
His debut album, “The Journey,” was released in 2023, followed by his second album, “Route 96,” in 2026, featuring Steve Vai as a guest, who had declared himself a fan of Mancuso years earlier.
RS20MM
The RS20MM’s body is made of chambered mahogany with a figured maple top. This makes the guitar lighter and gives it a more resonant, open sound. It features a three-piece mahogany neck (reinforced with carbon fiber), a rosewood fingerboard, and 22 jumbo stainless steel frets.
The dimensions are a 12-inch fretboard radius and a 24.76-inch scale length, more Gibson than Fender. The RS20MM features a Tune-O-Matic bridge with a stopbar and locking tuners. Restringing is quick and easy, and the guitar should hold its tuning well.
DiMarzio PAF 36th Anniversary
The Signature model features two DiMarzio PAF 36th Anniversary humbucking pickups. Master Volume and Master Tone controls let you dial in your desired sound.
Plus, there’s also a push/pull function: pulling the Tone pot activates the Focus Switch, a kind of passive boost that emulates overwound pickups: less treble, more mids and bass.
