UnplugRed & BlepFX Sucrose: Harmonic and Subharmonic Generator
When UnplugRed and BlepFX team up, you can be sure that something great is in the making. Sucrose, their entry for this year’s KVR Developer Challenge, certainly delivers on this promise. Adorned with the playful graphics we’ve come to love from UnplugRed, Sucrose is a harmonic and subharmonic generator that can transform and fatten up your tracks without destroying the dynamics.
According to the developers, the algorithm uses a Hilbert transform-based phase multiplication technique. While the sonic results are somewhat comparable to distortion, the output signal remains clean with unaltered dynamics.
Sucrose lets you control the sub-, 2nd and 3rd harmonics separately. You can also control the fundamental. This allows you to achieve the perfect balance for any signal, from beefy basses and kick drums to sharp and edgy guitars and synths. For additional tone shaping, the plugin also includes a couple of filters.
Sucrose is available for macOS, Windows, and Linux in VST3, AU, and CLAP formats.
Box of Rules Box of Bass: The Bass Rig You’ve Always Dreamed Of
Box of Bass is your one-stop shop for a huge bass sound. Inspired by the developer’s own bass recording rig, this plugin aims to make this sound and flexibility accessible to aspiring musicians who may not be able to afford such a massive rig.
Box of Bass splits your DI signal into nine separate strips. In addition to the raw DI signal, you get a true sub channel, two clean cabs (12” and 15”), three driven mics (57, 421, Tweeter), and two rooms (near and far). The rooms can be fed by any combination of the other strips. In addition, there’s a drive section with drive, release, and sustain controls, a saturation stage in the output, and a master EQ. This allows you to craft massive bass sounds from nothing but a DI signal.
The developer points out that his goal was to make the plugin “mix-ready”, so the signal shouldn’t require much processing once it comes out of Box of Bass. Very nice!

Friendgineer Labs Chance: A Happy Accident Machine!
Another entry in this year’s KVR Developer Challenge, Chance is a random multi-effects plugin that delivers a huge range of creative effects at the push of a button. Hidden beneath the playful interface are dozens of different effects chains, so the results can vary considerably and you never know what you’re going to get, which is the whole point.
That said, there are ways to control the madness. The randomized effects chains are divided into five categories: delay, modulation, reverb, pitch shifting, and distortion. Before you roll the dice, you can dial in how much of each you want. And the cute rubber duck controls a multiband compressor and limiter to mush it all together. The developer warns that it gets pretty addictive, and I concur!
Chance is available for macOS and Windows in VST3, AU, and AAX formats.
