The inspiration for the Silver 17 comes from an incredibly rare tube microphone called the 19A18, which was produced by the Leningrad Optical Mechanical Association (LOMO) in the 1960s. Only around 300 units were ever produced, so rather than letting it sleep in the annals of history, Soyuz has created a new S17E edge-terminated capsule that has similar characteristics to the M7-style capsule in the 19A18.
However, the Silver isn’t just a vintage clone. In fact, it delivers a bright and airy, more open sound compared to the other mics in the 017 series, while maintaining the rich lower midrange of the original 19A18. The smooth, polished high-frequency response makes it ideal for modern Pop vocal recording applications, especially in situations where you want to capture as natural a sound as possible.
Its new 34mm gold-sputtered S17E capsule is hand-machined in-house, which resulted in a comprehensive redesign of the 017 TUBE with different backplate mechanics, acoustic resistance, and diaphragm tension. This gives the Silver 17 its own unique voice within the 017 series, with a balance of colouration and enhancement throughout the frequency range.
