Steampipe Preset Pack 2 for Erica Synths Steampipe by Davide Puxeddu
Erica Synth’s Steampipe is one of those rare synths that was born in software (NI Reaktor) and then made the jump to hardware. Even more rare is the fact that the hardware took the concept to bigger and better things!
The Steampipe is a physical modelling synth, a relative rarity in the hardware world these days, which is strange when you think that the first commercial physical modelling hardware synths debuted in the early 1990s with instruments like Yamaha’s VP1, VL1 and VL7 and KORG’s Prophecy and Z1.
But in a world where MPE is rapidly becoming the norm, physical modelling more than lends itself to the power and nuance that MPE provides. The Steampipe, whilst working perfectly well with MPE keyboards, is optimised for wind controllers.
Steampipe Preset Pack 2 has been developed by Italian sound designer, Davide Puxeddu, who you may well have seen gracing instruments from the likes of Arturia and more. This pack contains 20 new, custom sounds for the instrument.

Nostalgic Flow for Synapse Audio Dune 3 by Anton Anru
Dune 3 by Synapse Audio is a powerful, multi-sysnthesis engined synth that is capable of some huge sounds, with its ability to have two oscillator stacks, each using 32 oscillators each! Couple that with its 8-voice unison mode and this thing should come with a health warning!
It uses virtual analogue, wavetables and FM to create its sounds and comes stacked with loads of modulation capabilities, performance features and very decent FX. It’s also MPE capable, so it really does pack a punch.
Now we have a new bank of arpeggiated patches courtesy of Anton Anru, entitled Nostalgic Flow. Rather than just a bunch of 50 patches that all run through the arp, Anton has used tempo within the modulation to come up with complex, tempo synced patches that evolve over time.
It’s a clever use of this synth’s powerful sound shaping tools and one that will work across multiple genres and styles. Every patch’s volume and brightness is connected to velocity as well as the Mod wheel adding expression via the filter, tuning or vibrato.

Quintessence of Perverted Misrepresentation for UVI Falcon by Leap Into Void
If we were giving away prizes for the best name of a preset pack, then this effort from Leap Into Void would win outright! Quintessence of Perverted Misrepresentation is described as ‘deformed sequences and syndustry industopia‘ for UVI Falcon.
The collection is divided into three sections. Pulsatorium focuses on multi-layer, tuned sequences, assembled, as the whole bank is, from field recordings of construction areas, machines, caterpillars (I’m assuming the industrial machines, not small, green wiggly things), power-fields and factory environments.
The samples are stretched and sliced using Falcon’s wealth of built-in sample tools so that every sequence follows the tempo of your project. The next section, Atmoscapygen covers atmospheres and soundscapes.
This section makes heavy use of Falcon’s granular engine as well as its advanced modulation capabilities. The results are dark, cinematic, creepy and distorted sounds, perfect for scoring horror and psychological thrillers.
Finally, Syndustry is an homage to the dark synthwave epitomised by the likes of John Carpenter. Think of Blade Runner, and you’re in the ballpark. These sounds conjure up images of dark, smoky, sinister cityscapes and the population therein.
Rebuilt Freebie for Kontakt by Inlet Audio
Inlet Audio’s Rebuilt Upright is a sampled Fischer upright piano from 1880, which embraces the imperfections of a piano that is well over a century old. The tuning isn’t perfect, some keys play heavier than others, and all of this adds up to a very real experience.
Rebuilt Freebie takes this “not quite right” piano and distils it down to 1 core articulation that isn’t included in the full version, and 5 presets, all taken from the same sampling session for the full product. The interface is minimal, but boy, does it sound really good!
It reminds me a little of sneaking into a part of my grandmother’s house where she kept an old upright that, for some reason known only to her, I wasn’t allowed to play. It was dusty, out of tune and had seen far better days, but it was mesmerising to a young boy.
