PRS Jon Jourdan: Over $4k for one Humbucker?

The PRS Jon Jourdan is a limited run of only 200 signature guitars. These stripped-back barebones models come with a single pickup, no fret markers and at over $4k each, you’ll need deep pockets to get one.

Mammoth

PRS has partnered with Mammoth touring guitarist Jon Jourdan to release a limited-edition signature guitar that is stripped back to the bare essentials. Tailored specifically for the demands of life on the road, this all-new model features an all-mahogany construction, a single bridge humbucker, and a solitary volume control.

Before we delve into the specifics, I must state that I really love the minimal styling and utilitarian workhorse look of this guitar. But the pricetag is well, let me just say it is a little overpriced for such a minimal instrument.

Jon Jourdan

Limited to just 200 units worldwide, this model takes a decidedly minimalist approach to electric guitar design. Stripping away the neck pickup and tone control, it leaves very little standing between the player and their amp. Which is exactly what Jon Jourdan wanted from his signature guitar.

“At the end of the day, my guitar is a tool. I want it to do exactly what I need it to, so we took out all the ‘extra’ stuff I don’t need.” Jon Jourdan

I really get this thought process, and I do adore a single-pickup guitar, but $4200.00 is a lot of money, even for a guitar.

Minimal Metal

The guitar strips away unnecessary clutter, featuring just a single PRS Metal pickup in the treble position paired with a lone volume control.

This volume knob is intentionally moved to the spot where a traditional tone pot would normally sit. Because Jourdan typically plays with the volume wide open, this repositioned knob stays completely out of his way, ensuring he won’t accidentally bump into it when going all out during a performance.

It is very practical, and I can really get behind this single control, out-of-the-way design.

Specifications

Crafted for seamless playability and a sleek look, the guitar features a 22-fret Pattern Regular mahogany neck paired with a clean, inlay-free ebony fretboard. I’ve never liked PRS Bird inlays, so this is a huge win for me personally, and I usually opt for Moons or Dots with my PRS guitars when it is an option.

However, to ensure easy navigation on dark stages, it is equipped with glowing green Luminlay side dots. The minimalist high-performance hardware lineup is completed by a PRS adjustable stoptail bridge, a proprietary nut, and Phase III locking tuners finished with ebony buttons.

If you can find one, they are available in two finishes: Platinum Metallic and Gunmetal Metallic. I really like that Platinum one, so I’m hoping we see a PRS SE version somewhere down the line, so I can actually afford one!

Verdict

I love Esquires and Les Paul Juniors, so single-pickup guitars are most definitely my thing.

Awesome guitar, but way too expensive and being a limited run of only 200 will mean scalpers and fanboys will be fighting over these.

But I do really love it (I just hate the price) and would happily own one in a heartbeat.
