The Pittsburgh Modular Microvolt 3901 is a plugin version of the Microvolt 3900 experimental semi-modular analog synth for desktop and iPad.
Introduced in 2018, the Microvolt 3900 brought traditional East Coast elements like ADSR envelopes and subtractive filters with more unconventional West Coast synthesis aspects like wavefolding and low-pass gating. For the first time, Pittsburgh Modular has brought one of its designs to the software domain, offering more flexibility without compromising on the sound.

The Microvolt 3901 is more than just a one-to-one recreation of the 3900 hardware synth. In fact, Pittsburgh Modular has also modeled a selection of its legendary catalog of Eurorack modules. Each component has been carefully modeled in order to capture the warmth and character of the original hardware, while the software user interface opens up a new set of possibilities.
For sound generation, the 3901 plugin offers a range of oscillators you can choose from, including ones from the Microvolt, the Lifeforms SV-1, the Voltage Lab mini, and the Generator, as well as a VCO 2 setting based on the Microvolt, and two digital oscillators from the Double Helix and the DNA Symbiotic Waves.
In addition, there is a range of wild and wacky modulation tools, including the VILFO, the Dual LFO, the Function Generator, the Game System, the Microvolt Mod Sources, the Three Stage Envelope, the Envelope Generator, the Modulation Oscillator, Sample & Hold, and Ring Modulator. Pittsburgh Modular has also gone to town with the effects section with a range of 19 creative effects modules.
The beauty of the Microvolt 3901 plugin is that although this is the first Pittsburgh Modular synth plugin, they weren’t exactly spitballing when they came up with the design. Instead, the company draws from extensive knowledge and experience in synthesis designs in order to capture the magic of the Microvolt and some of its other magical bits and bobs.
