iZotope Photon is a new ARA plugin and desktop app for stem splitting that runs on your GPU and also has built-in audio restoration features.
While stem separation may still be something of a gimmick in the context of some DAWs, iZotope understands its potential utility in music and post-production workflows, and with Photon, presents an intuitive tool for professionals.
iZotope Photon
Photon is the first combined offering from iZotope under Boris FX, and comes equipped with 12 powerful machine learning models for different applications. Stem splitting modes include a music separation setting that divides mixed files into four stems and a drum separation mode that isolates the kick, hi-hat, snare, toms, and cymbals into five individual files.
With the voice separation tool, you can take a stereo podcast recording or dialogue track and split it into six different stems, as the process automatically distinguishes between the different voices. Meanwhile, there is also a simple voice isolation tool that separates songs into two parts for creating acapellas or instrumental tracks quickly and easily.
What’s more, there is a cinema mode created specifically for post-production that divides files into four stems, including SFX, music, and dialogue tracks, and one additional track for the remaining sounds. For enhancement and audio repair, there is a voice restoration mode for speech and indoor and outdoor processing modes for optimizing scenes in different environments.
Overall, Photon has been created as a tool you can reach for to clean up and isolate sounds before you start mixing a song or motion picture. With the ability to export files as MP3, WAVE, FLAC, or directly into the original video file, Photon can be used at any level from content creation to a high-budget blockbuster.
