The summer months always fall quiet when it comes to new products, as many people take time off, so there’s no better time to pump some new patches into some of your existing synths and rediscover the reasons why you bought all that gear in the first place! Surfaces for 1010music nanobox Fireball by A.Kav
If you’re away on vacation but can’t bear to be parted from something that makes a musical tune, 1010music’s nanobox Fireball is just the thing for you! If you had told me back in the mid 80s, when I was fawning over huge, expensive machines like the PPG Wave, that one day, I’d have a wavetable synth the size of a packet of cigarettes, I’d have laughed in your face!

Vintage Solo for Moog Messenger by Anton Anru
I still can’t get over how good the Moog Messenger is. A solid, punchy, classic Moog monosynth that can be had for a little over €600 was many people’s pipe dream. And yet, here we are! There was so much pre-emptive negativity flying around prior to its launch, all of which vanished when the Messenger broke cover.
It’s a Moog in every sense of the word, brought bang up to date, delivering the classic Moog tone with modern functionality and plenty of built-in performance features that make it, like all those other classic Moog monosynths, perfect for bass and leads and capable of a broad range of sounds.
And if you’re looking for more inspiration, then Anton Anru has you covered with their latest Messenger sound bank, Vintage Solo. As the title suggests, these are predominantly lead sounds, all 64 of them, but they play in a variety of styles. Dark, bright, soft and breathy, punchy and hard, there’s a suitable lead sound for almost everyone here.

Cinematic Legacy for Cherry Audio Ensoniq ESQ-1 by Nick Klimenko
I continue to be somewhat surprised by the popularity of Cherry Audio’s resurrection of Ensoniq’s fabulous ESQ-1. There has been an outpouring of affection and nostalgia around Ensoniq’s synths of late, with numerous software (and one or two hardware) clones popping up all over the place.
The more you learn about Ensoniq, the more you realise why so many people hold them in such high regard, and so it is really great to see their name being officially used on synthesizers again, all these years after the brand got swallowed up into relative obscurity.
This rekindled enthusiasm has also had sound designers getting busy with 3rd party preset packs. Just last week, we had a new, free bank for the ESQ-1 by the legends at Syntaur, and now we bring news of another pack, this time from Nick Klimenko of LFO.store.
Cinematic Legacy contains 40 new sounds for the ESQ-1, but not only the new Cherry Audio version. These sounds will also load up on the original hardware ESQ-1 and its sequel, the SQ-80! How’s that for backwards compatibility!
As the name implies, we have a bunch of cinematic sounds covering all the usual styles and categories, but better still is the fact that it’s just a mere €10!
VHS Memories for Synapse Audio Proxima by Anton Anru
Entrenched as I am in the world of synths, there are some instruments that either pass me by or fall well beneath my radar, and Synapse Audio’s Proxima is one of those. This is by no means a slight on Synapse, and is purely of my own doing. They make some fine instruments, and I already own their Legend HZ and Dune 3 instruments.
Maybe it’s because I didn’t really have a thing for the Sequential Prophet 600 upon which Proxima is based, or maybe I was asleep the day it came out. Either way, seeing a new bank of sounds for it by Anton Anru made me have a listen, and I may well have missed a trick here!
Entitled VHS Memories, a name that immediately puts you in mind of 80s retro genres, this bank contains 64 cinematic and atmospheric sounds for Proxima, borne out in the fact that the bulk of patches are pads, strings, drones, textures and keys.
As always, the patches have been designed to make use of Proxima’s expressive capabilities, and there’s definitely something for everyone here. Loads of rich, evolving pads, plenty of slightly detuned and vintage-sounding pads, this collection certainly shows off Proxima’s wares to great effect!
