The ‘Lost’ Big Muff Circuit
Originally designed in the 1970s by Electro-Harmonix founder Mike Matthews and circuit designer Bob Myer, this dual op-amp fuzz circuit was lost to time for decades.
That changed when Josh Scott of JHS Pedals and artist Daniel Danger discovered the original handwritten schematic hidden away in Myer’s workshop. Scott carefully decoded the archived notes, finally allowing Electro-Harmonix to bring the long-lost design to life as the Big Muff Pi 2.
Deluxe Big Muff Pi 2
This new EHX Deluxe Big Muff Pi 2 offers the ultimate Big Muff 2 circuit for guitarists. We have already seen multiple iterations of the dual op-amp circuit released in recent months, and now we have a fully featured version for guitar players, which follows the Deluxe Bass version announced in May.
So what does Deluxe mean?
Instead of merely recreating the past, Electro-Harmonix used this foundation to expand the formula into a Deluxe model with added features.
At its core, the Deluxe version of the Big Muff Pi 2 is still a true Big Muff. It features the traditional Level, Tone, and Sustain knobs, giving you everything from a smooth vintage fuzz to the aggressive, singing sustain that has defined rock, shoegaze, and alternative music for years.
To tame the chaos of high-gain settings, a dedicated Gate control drastically reduces unwanted hiss and background noise. A Blend knob allows you to mix your clean guitar signal back into the heavy fuzz, preserving your string articulation and low-end clarity without sacrificing saturation.
Additionally, players can choose between Latching and Momentary footswitch operations, which opens the door to expressive, quick bursts of fuzz during live performances. This is a great feature, and many of the newer EHX pedals now use it, which is more than welcome, as it makes performance much easier when you just need a quick blast of fuzz.
Advanced EQ and Midrange Shaping
Where this pedal truly separates itself is in its highly customizable EQ section. The familiar Wicker switch returns with three distinct voicings, giving you progressively brighter and more open high-end responses to help the fuzz cut through a dense band mix.
The pedal also boasts a dedicated, footswitchable midrange circuit that can boost or cut your signal. With independent Mid Level and Frequency controls, you can precisely target the exact frequencies you want to highlight or remove.
Finally, a selectable Hi/Lo Q switch lets you refine the overall shape of that midrange response. Whether you are chasing a vintage scooped tone or a highly focused, modern lead sound, the Deluxe Big Muff Pi 2 is fully equipped to deliver.
That’s not all, as EHX has also included an Expression Pedal Input, allowing players to sweep the mid-frequency control in real time. Great for faux wah-type tones and more.

Who is it for?
If you need more control over your drive tones, or perhaps you just love tinkering, then this is going to be the Big Muff 2 circuit for you. Yes, it costs a little more than the standard editions, but it offers so much more in terms of control and expression.
