The DA5 Ruby combo is engineered to replicate the tones that Doug Aldrich uses, and follows his 100-watt signature DA100 Ruby amp head, which was released in January.
This combo uses a push-pull tube power stage with a single 12BH7 power tube and an ECC83 preamp tube. It helps to keep the volume down to 5 watts, and with a built-in power reduction, it will drop to 0.5 watts. This all makes for a great tube amp sound at low volumes, perfect for home and studio use.
Aldrich 50
Unusually, for such a small combo, it comes fitted with a 12-inch Aldrich 50 loudspeaker rated at 50 watts of power handling. Such a large speaker can handle low-end and high-end detail very well, and won’t have any headroom issues.
Four Voices
This amp has a two-channel footswitchable (FS-22 footswitch included in the price) layout with four voices on offer. The Clean Channel has just Volume and Tone controls with two voices that go from bright and chimey to a warmer tone.
Then the dedicated Overdrive Channel has controls for Gain and Volume controls, with Bass, Middle, and Treble controls. This channel has Blackstar’s Infinite Shape Feature (ISF) so you can sweep from a US to British amp tone.
It also has a built-in digital reverb, so you can dial in reverb to taste.
CabRig IR
Another useful feature is the CabRig IR-based speaker simulation; it uses onboard DSP to emulate cabinets, microphones, and room acoustics, giving a realistic tone when recording, via the emulated output. An internal load protection system safely disconnects the speaker for silent recording, so no accidently damaging your tube amp.
Connections include USB-C Audio Out for recording, an XLR CabRig DI Out, and a 1/4″ headphone out.
Limited Run & Extras
The whole package includes the aforementioned FS-22 2-way Footswitch, a Certificate of Authenticity, and some Dunlop Picks. It is a limited-edition run, but Blackstar hasn’t stated how many they are releasing, so we have to guess it will be for a limited time.
