Behringer JN-80 sounds and presets teaser

Power up your Behringer JN-80 with two new preset packs, plus sounds for the Sequential Fourm and Minimal Audio Current, and Arabic Oud heads to Engine Audio.

2 New Behringer JN-80 Banks by Ultimate Patches

The Behringer JN-80 was one of the company’s most-anticipated releases of recent years. The Roland Juno-60 clone got a proper announcement at NAMM at the beginning of the year, with preorders starting not too long after. Shipments have finally begun, with units arriving on doorsteps as you read this.

To celebrate, Ultimate Patches, the synthesis team behind the factory presets in the Behringer JN-80, has just dropped two new packs that considerably expand upon the factory selection. Available in two sets of 100 presets each, or a joint one with a bonus 22 patches for a combined total of 222, the sets feature a little bit of everything, from strings, plucks and leads to guitars, flutes and whistles, and are aimed at pretty much every genre around, including trance, dubstep and even country. Take a listen to the demo video (below) to hear what they have to offer.

Volume 1 and Volume 2 have 100 patches each and are on sale for $19.99 apiece (compared to the regular price of $39). Grab them both for $29.99. That’ll go up to $59 at some point.

Behringer JN-80 is available from Thomann* and Sweetwater*.

J3PO Fourm Patches for Sequential Fourm by J3PO

Musician and synthesist J3PO (that’s Julian Waterfall Pollack to his friends, family and tax collector) recently released a new album called A Brief Odyssey. The album was made entirely with just a reverb pedal and the Sequential Fourm, the four-voice analog poly that J3PO called “immediate and musical.” As part of the album’s production process, he created a bunch of new sounds and has now made them available for download.

Called J3PO Fourm Patches, the pack includes 29 presets designed to showcase many different sides of the Fourm. “Some patches make extensive use of the instrument’s excellent polyphonic aftertouch capabilities, while others lean heavily into its powerful sequencer,” he says on the product page. In the description for the YouTube video (below), he stresses that it’s less a collection of “programmed sounds” and more snapshots of the creative journey he took to make the album. That being said, it does include pads, leads, basses, plucks, sequences, textures, and evolving atmospheres. As you might expect, they’re beautiful sounds and display a lot of character.

J3PO Fourm Patches is available now for $19 from Julian’s website.

Sequential Fourm is available from Thomann* and Sweetwater*.

Dreaming Arps for Minimal Audio Current by Ilian

After two analog synths, the Behringer JN-80 and Sequential Fourm, next let’s turn our attention to something digital. Something Current. Namely, Current 2.0 from Minimal Audio, and a new pack of patches from Ilian.

Current is one of my favorite modern soft synths. It’s flexible, powerful and sounds great. All of these descriptors can also be applied to Dreaming Arps, the set of presets available on Anton Anru’s store. As the name suggests, it’s all about arpeggios, although you get a variety of textures and styles within that subset.

Each of the presets takes advantage of the four macros. “They can change tone, stereo width, modulation depth and rate, noise level, distortion, detuning, space/echo/reverb, effects mix, envelope parameters, and others,” according to Anton.

They sound great and really show off what Current can do. These would work well in electronic dance music like trance and melodic techno.

Dreaming Arps is on sale now for $19.95 on the Anton Anru site.

Minimal Audio Current is available from Sweetwater*.

Best Service Arabic Oud

For the last entry of the week, let’s leave synthesizers behind and explore an acoustic instrument, the oud. A lute-type stringed instrument from the Middle East, the oud has a lovely sound and may even be the ancestor of the guitar.

Sample company Best Service first released Arabic Oud, its oud sample instrument, in 2019 but now it’s made it available in the free Engine Player format from Engine Audio. For the Arabic Oud sound set, Best Service worked with oud virtuoso Bassam Ayoub and recorded three different ouds. It combines “authentic playing techniques, natural dynamics, and the distinctive character of the traditional instrument with the modern workflow of the Engine Player,” according to the company.

Along with the 39 articulations for different types of performance, plus MIDI songs and loops, it also features an integrated microtuning system, with traditional Maqam tunings within the instrument. Additionally, all three ouds are available as Full and Lite instruments.

Arabic Oud is available at an introductory 30% off price of $89. Owners of the original release can update for free.
